Assignment #2 Figure Sculpture: Human (3 class periods)
After studying a variety of sculptures, looking at details and textures applied to these samples students will design a form that they wish to sculpt in clay. The first step is to sketch out ideas in sketchbook showing 3 angles in their drawing (Front, Side and Back views) Once their sketch is approved they will start their sculpting process. In this project students will learn to wedge their clay. They will then learn to pull from the clay their basic form. After the desired shape is achieved students will use clay tools to add details to their figure.
Assignment #3 Figure sculpture: Egyptian Cat, Falcon Horus, Sphinx. (3-5 class periods)
After studying Egyptian sculpture, students will re-create an Egyptian form.
Assignment #4 Slab Box, vase or Mug
Students will design either a box or a mug on paper. After their sketch is complete students will cut out a template for their project. If it is a box they will have 5-6 pieces (bottom and 4 sides) the bottom needs to be largest so that it can be used as the base to apply the sides to. Students will roll out a slab of clay and use their template to cut out pieces. Students will learn how to attach clay pieces together, by cross hatching connecting pieces and applying slip to the areas. Students need to personalize this project with some type of attachment (dragonfly, butterfly, bugs, horse, raised initials etc.) Crosshatching and slip technique will be used to apply the attachment.
Assignment #5 3 attachments (for future Mosaic project)
Students will come up with a theme for the next project which will be a mosaic frame. Students need to make 3 small attachments for this project. Ideas: The Sea: Fish, turtles, star fish, clams, Nature: Flowers, trees, bugs, Butterflies, The sky: Suns, Moon, stars. Note these attachments must be small: No bigger than 2.5” in diameter. They must be flat on the bottom. Students must add texture to these pieces. Once pieces are fired students will then apply glaze.
Part II Mosaic
Assignment #6 Mosaic Mirror (3-6 class periods)
Students will each receive a mirrored frame. They will place their clay attachments on the frame. Students will have an assortment of tile pieces to create a mosaic. Students must think about how this mosaic should look, think about design, what colors look best together, should there be a pattern or would it look better as a random design. Students will place pieces of tile all throughout the frame leaving no more than a 1/8” between each piece. After all the pieces are placed, students will glue each piece down with a small amount of mastic. The tiles may get mastic on them so students need to clean the pieces as they go with a damp cloth.
After the tiles are all in place and the frame has been dry for 24 hours students will now mix up grout and apply to the spaces between each piece.
The grout may be colored if desired. When the piece is complete students need to cleanup the frame with a clean sponge. Using a Q-tip and Windex students can clean mirror off.
Spring Break!

Students may choose to add a copper wire for hanging purposes. (Misuse of all stained glass tools will result in referral an incompletion of project.)
